Overview

Marina Park is Port Blair’s front porch: a landscaped strip along the harbour beside Aberdeen Jetty, with the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex at one end and the town’s evening life spread along it. By day it’s a transit point — this is where you buy tickets and board boats for Ross Island and North Bay — and by evening it’s where Port Blair comes to walk, eat chaat, put the kids on the rides and watch the lights on Ross across the water.

Some sites call it “Marina Beach”; there’s a small shore, but it’s a promenade and harbour, not a place to swim. For a swim go to Corbyn’s Cove.

Getting there

Five minutes’ walk downhill from Aberdeen Bazaar or from the Cellular Jail; any auto knows “Marina Park” or “Water Sports Complex”. Parking is available.

What to do

  • Take a boat — Ross Island + North Bay combos and Ross-only tickets are sold at the counters; boats run through the morning and early afternoon. Go early for the best light and the smallest crowds.
  • Water sports — jet-ski, banana boat and speedboat rides in the harbour, and pedal boats for children, from the complex.
  • Evening walk — the promenade fills up after 5 pm; the harbour, the naval ships and Ross Island make a good backdrop for sunset.
  • Eat — a row of stalls and small restaurants do chaat, ice cream, coconuts and simple meals.
  • The memorial and statues — the park has a memorial to the tsunami and a handful of statues; the Rajiv Gandhi statue gives the complex its name.

Practical notes

  • Buy boat tickets in person early, especially for Sunday and holidays; touts outside sell “combos” at a markup — the official counters are inside.
  • The Ross Island Light & Sound Show boats leave from here in the evening; ask at the counter for that day’s time.
  • Cash and UPI both work at the counters and stalls.
  • Not a swimming spot; keep children away from the jetty edges.
  • The whole area closes late in the evening; it’s safe and well lit.

Nearby

Cellular Jail is a short walk uphill; the Anthropological Museum and Aberdeen Bazaar are a few minutes away; Ross Island and North Bay are the boat trips from here.
