Before You Go

What the Andamans Are Actually Like

The things guidebooks skip — how people speak, what things cost and why, and the quirks worth knowing before you land.

Language

Hindi, not Bengali

Most islands have a Bengali majority, yet Hindi is what people use with a stranger — right across the territory, down to Campbell Bay.

Prices

The label really does say more

India prints a maximum price on the packaging. In the Andamans that printed price is genuinely higher than the mainland — freight is in the label, not a markup.

Alcohol

Bring it with you

Port Blair has three or four liquor shops; most islands have one. You may fly in up to 5 litres of spirits in checked baggage, and here it is worth doing.

Names

Havelock, not Swaraj Dweep

The official names changed. Boat crews, drivers and ticket counters mostly did not. Both are understood everywhere.

Safety

Shops without security guards

A high-trust, low-crime society where people know each other — though being quoted a tourist price is still perfectly normal.

Getting around

Autos run on the meter

In Port Blair the autorickshaws actually use the meter, which makes them cheap and predictable. There is no Ola, Uber or Rapido here — flag one down or phone for a cab.

Monsoon

Clear sky, cancelled boat

June and July are near-continuous rain, tapering to about 30% by October. Boats get stopped by rough seas even on clear days, and the murk kills underwater visibility.

Economy

Defence, not tourism

Tourism is the third biggest industry here, behind defence and the civil service — though Havelock and Neil live on it almost entirely.

Connectivity

Fibre since 2020

An undersea cable from Chennai replaced slow satellite links. Most areas now have 4G or 5G — Neil was not one of the landing points.

Help & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ferry travel, luggage rules, and island hopping in the Andamans.

? How early should I book ferry tickets for the Andaman Islands?
We recommend booking tickets 15 to 30 days in advance, especially between October and May. Morning sailings connecting Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island sell out rapidly.
? What is the baggage allowance on high-speed private ferries?
Most private operators (Makruzz, Nautika, Green Ocean) allow up to 25 kg of checked luggage per ticketed passenger, plus a small cabin bag or handbag.
? What happens in case of rough weather or ferry cancellations?
Safety is paramount in island waters. If a sailing is cancelled due to adverse weather advisories by the Port Management Board, passengers are rescheduled to the next available vessel or granted a full refund.
? Do I need special permits to visit Havelock and Neil Island?
Indian citizens do not require permits. Foreign nationals with a valid Indian tourist/business visa can visit 30 designated islands (including Port Blair, Havelock, Neil and Baratang) without a Restricted Area Permit (RAP).
? How long before departure should I report at the jetty?
Passengers should arrive at the boarding jetty at least 45 to 60 minutes prior to departure for security screening and physical boarding pass collection.
